What a minor ailment assessment is

Ontario allows pharmacists to assess a defined list of common, short-term health concerns and, where it is appropriate, prescribe a medication for them. The province sets the list. Examples include pink eye (conjunctivitis), cold sores, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, hemorrhoids, mild eczema and other skin irritation, acid reflux, seasonal allergies, insect bites and menstrual cramps.

At Eastview Pharmacy you can ask for an assessment without booking an appointment. The pharmacist talks with you in private, asks about your symptoms and history, and decides with you whether a prescription, an over-the-counter option or a referral to a doctor makes the most sense. If your concern is not on the list, or if something needs a closer look, the pharmacist will tell you and point you to the right place.

What a pharmacist cannot do here

Minor ailment prescribing is meant for common, mild and short-term concerns. It is not a replacement for your family doctor, a walk-in clinic for complex problems, or emergency care. Severe pain, high fever, trouble breathing, chest pain, sudden vision changes or symptoms that keep coming back need a doctor or emergency department. If you are in doubt, call 911 or Health811 for advice.

The list of conditions is set by the province and can change over time. If you are not sure whether your concern qualifies, call us at (905) 725-3594. A few questions on the phone can save you a trip. You can also read our answers on common pharmacy questions.
