Prescription compounding in Oshawa

When a commercially made product does not suit you, a prescription can sometimes be prepared in the pharmacy in a different form, strength or flavour. Talk to us about compounding.

Compounding

What compounding means

Compounding is the preparation of a medication in the pharmacy, based on a prescription, when a product made by a manufacturer is not a good fit. Examples include a liquid for someone who cannot swallow tablets, an alternate flavour for a child, a dye-free or sugar-free version, or a topical cream. Compounding is also used for some pediatric and palliative (hospice) needs.

At Eastview Pharmacy, compounding starts with a prescription from your doctor, nurse practitioner or another authorized prescriber. The pharmacist reviews whether the request can be prepared in our pharmacy, works with your prescriber on any details and lets you know when it will be ready. Compounded products are prepared following the standards that apply to Ontario pharmacies.

Good to know

Not every medication can be compounded, and some requests need specialized facilities that a community pharmacy may not have. If we cannot prepare something, we will tell you clearly and help you understand your options. Storage matters: some compounded products need refrigeration or have a shorter shelf life than manufactured products, and your label will say so.

If you are not sure whether compounding is possible for your prescription, call (905) 725-3594 and ask to speak with the pharmacist. You can also ask about blister packaging or a MedsCheck if you manage several medications.
